Virginia Street Project – 5/20 Stakeholder Update

Virginia Street Construction Set to Begin June 17

Federal Transit Administration Officials Announce Next Milestone in Federal Grant Process

The United States Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration has issued a Letter of No Prejudice (LONP) to the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County, authorizing the RTC to incur costs for early construction activities for the Virginia Street Bus RAPID Transit Extension Project. The RTC received a $40.4-million allocation from the FTA in April 2019. The LONP is the next step in the RTC’s federal funding path toward a Capital Investment Grants (CIG) Program agreement anticipated to be received in late July. The LONP permits the RTC to incur reimbursable costs for the Virginia Street project prior to receiving the CIG funding.

Project Team Canvasses Midtown to Raise Construction Awareness

On Wednesday, May 15 members of the project team walked Midtown to visit businesses and residents who will be impacted by construction first. The team distributed a flier of the construction timeline including traffic control information as well as different options for communication and contact information. Construction operations will first take place on Virginia Street between Plumb Lane and Mt. Rose Street and on select side streets. This work will last through fall of 2019. Please see the map below for a complete construction timeline.

Project Public Information Office Opening Soon

Beginning June 13, a project public information office will be open on Virginia Street for another way the community can learn about the project throughout construction. The office will provide people the opportunity to speak with a project representative in person, look at renderings and maps, and learn about ways they can get involved. The office will be located on Virginia Street between The Z Bar and Theatre Book Store. Construction operations are scheduled to begin June 17.

Tuesdays between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and Thursdays between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
